What IS that I’m smelling? Stick your nose in a glass of wine, close your eyes, and give a big, long sniff. Humans can recognize over 1,000 different aromas but can typically only name a hundred or so. Practice greatly improves your perception of aromas and ability to identify specific aromas. This also helps to identify a wine –you pick up aromas of currant, black cherry, and plum? Hmmm… very likely this is Merlot. We use aroma jars to practice with the wines in this very hands-on workshop.
